My Tumblr Feature Wishlist
Please do this stuff.
Block that fool in every way possible. They can’t see your posts, they can’t reply, their IP cannot touch your blog. They can’t even see your web version of tumblr. Super extra duper block.
There are some posts that folks only want to share with their direct following. Adding a check box to make something “not rebloggable” would be nice.
Threaded private messaging.
Most people do not care for fanmail. It is nice that there is no character limit and you can use links. But the fonts are
extremely a tad annoying and take up a lot of space. You cannot see what you sent. Your side of the message is lost.
I think instead of fanmail, a private messaging system would be more ideal. Gmail threads their messages so that the latest one is expanded, however you can click and expand all of the sent/received messages from before. I think tumblr users would really like a feature like this.
Search multiple tags.
I want to search for cats. I want to search for cats in hats. I want to search for fat cats in hats
Post limits and ask limits should go. This is a major annoyance to many users.
Do not truncate text posts.
Make reblogging as a link an option, but don’t force it on us from the start. No one likes this. NO ONE.
More attractive Link posts.
The mint green just doesn’t fit with the rest of the dashboard design. I think you need to go back to the drawing board on this one. I think tumblr has some amazing designers, and I promise I am not trying to hurt their feelings, but this just doesn’t work.
Better search for blogs and tags.
Right now I have to use google to search my blog for something. I know the tag search has improved, but the search function on our blogs is nearly useless.
Fix errors when uploading GIFs.
This is extremely frustrating. Sometimes even if you fall within the GIF restrictions in every way, the gif will error out when uploading. Some gifs can take HOURS to make. Our time is valuable. You need to fix this. You need to fix this right away.
(Tip for users with this issue. Sometimes it is caused by over-saturated colors. Which is why cartoony gifs are most often the victim of this issue. Try desaturating your gifs. Otherwise you just have to reduce the filesize until it works. Sometimes you need to make them less than 300k. They will look awful, but they will work.)
Increase GIF size limit to 2 megabytes.
Most image sharing services allow 2 meg gifs. When people try to share things from those services on tumblr, they need to edit the gif and decrease its size. Not everyone has the know-how to do this and I feel like this excludes them from giffy fun. 1 megabyte is just not enough for some gifs without spending hours optimizing it. More than 2 megs can slow down computers. I really think 2 meg gifs are the optimum size.
Endless scrolling refresh.
Endless scrolling is great, but if you get to 300 to 500 posts it will slow your browser to a crawl. The ability to refresh endless scrolling at the post you are currently viewing would be nice.
Get rid of share button.
It is unnecessary and a waste of space.
Stop burying things in menus.
Not everything needs to be in a menu. In the drafts and queue there is a little gear that hides delete, edit, publish. This is frustrating.
When you are editing a post, the source box is buried under a menu. I think this discourages people from adding a source. The twitter description does not need to be in a pop up box. I understand the need for this on mobile apps, but the desktop should really take advantage of the extra space. All of those extra clicks waste time. They really do add up if you are editing, formatting, and queuing many posts. The desktop tumblr should be a model for efficiency, not a model for saving space.
"Queue this post for publishing?" popup.
When you queue something you get a popup that asks if you are sure you want to queue. This is a big time waster. I understand the need for it when deleting things, but if you accidentally queue something, it is easy enough to undo. Imagine queuing a hundred posts and having to hit that okay each time. Lose the popup.
Enable photo replies on all posts.
I love photo replies, but I always forget to check this… mainly because it is buried in a menu. Have an option to just have it on by default.
One click reblogging menu.
I want to be able to one-click reblog things into my drafts or queue. Xkit does this really well, but it should be built in to the tumblr desktop version. This feature in xkit saves me more time than anything else ever. I think many people feel the same way.
A better, better video player.
I know you improved it a little. But it is still pretty bad. First, it should not maximize by default. That should be something the user chooses. The quality is low res and enlarging it really shows that.
YOU NEED A VOLUME SLIDER. Some people don’t know how to adjust the volume of their recordings and it scares the crap out of me. Basically you should look at youtube’s video player and just copy that.
If you play an audio file, it should play in the background even if you go to another page on the dash. Having an “add to playlist” option would be even cooler. That way you can add songs as you scroll through the dash.
A zoom option.
Some people put a click-through on photos and this disables the ability to see the larger version of the image. Also, sometimes those click-throughs take you to shady sites. You might think you are enlarging a photo but instead you end up at a furry porn site while you are sitting in the middle of a Denny’s. Adding a little magnifying glass in the bottom corner of photos would allow us to know for sure we are just enlarging the image.
Second zoom/larger photo dimensions.
I think you should allow 3-5 megapixel images. The first click to enlarge will zoom in and fill the screen with the photo. If you enlarge again, it will go to 100% and then much like the panorama feature, you can click and drag around the photo. Sometimes there is some lovely detail in photos that you just can’t see any other way.
Why is this not a thing? If I don’t want to see royal baby posts I should be able to blacklist the words and not see royal baby posts. There are 3rd party extensions to do this, but this should really be built in to tumblr. Also, there are many people who have experienced trauma and are triggered by certain things. This would allow them to have a much safer tumblr experience.
Make asks rebloggable.
I never know which asks people will want to reblog. I always end up having to repost things and it is frustrating. Just add a checkbox that says, “Make this ask rebloggable?”
Always expanded thumbnails.
I like my thumbnails expanded by default. I hate that extra click. It should be an option in the settings that I can check.
Reply to replies.
We’ve been asking for this for years. You should be able to reply to replies publicly or privately. Another cool feature would be a “like” button on replies. You can let someone know you dug what they said.
If someone answers your ask, you should get a notification. You shouldn’t have to check their page every ten minutes to see if they answered you.
Filtering of notes.
Some posts have over 100,000 notes. If someone wants to see JUST the discussion they have to go through every like and reblog and it takes forever. This is probably one of the biggest wastes of my time. The endless scrolling of notes was a huge time saver, but it is not enough. Please add filter options at the top of notes. Maybe something like “Show replies and reblog comments only.”
WRAP TAGS WRAP TAG WRAP TAGS
Using that little slidey thing to see the tags is terrible. Please just wrap the tags to a new line.
When a post has many reblogs the blockquotes become awful and unmanageable to follow. There needs to be a different solution to this. Perhaps comment threading or something.
Sometimes I can’t tell what people’s avatars are. A little thing to click and expand them full size would be neat.
We want to be able to do this. Just make it happen.
Read more on the dash.
Allow us to hit read more and expand the post right there on the dash. Don’t make us risk going to a blog with autoplay.
ALLOW PHOTO UPLOADS ON ALL POSTS
Eliminate the need for those polaroid thumbnails. Let us add dash viewable photos on ANY post. And not just uploads from our computer… allow image urls to be uploadable as well.
Active follower count.
My follower count is a bit of a lie. There are thousands upon thousands of dormant tumblr accounts. I want to know how many active followers I have. Perhaps the number of followers that have been active within the last month. This would be very helpful to know what my reach is and if my audience building is successful.
Search and organize likes.
Likes just pile up over time and it is incredibly hard to go through and view things again. The ability to organize, bookmark, and search through likes would be very nice.
We want this stuff more than choclety milk. Please just do it. Pleeease.
