This is my second official photoshoot. I am trying to move out of my comfort zone of taking pictures of corgis, my parents, and Cheerios. I’ve spent the last two years learning every technical detail I could about how to take a picture, but when I introduced a human element, I ended up feeling like a beginner again.
This is my friend leonardwashopeful and we have been friends online for a while. We had not met in person until this day. I was a nervous wreck. My health situation means I don’t meet new people very often and I kind of forgot how to interact with human beings. She was very understanding as I tried to get comfortable.
We decided to keep things simple. Just a basic backdrop and lighting. I just wanted to get experience shooting with a new person. I soon realized that I had to direct her. Tell her the poses I wanted and the expressions I was going for. I had no idea how to do this. I think I ended up just blurting out emotional states. “Sultry! Happy! Sad! Perplexed! That scene in Serenity where Joss Whedon broke my heart!”
The good thing is that I learned a lot. Like +1000XP a lot. She was extremely patient and kind and beautiful and didn’t even mind a mischievous corgi overseeing the whole event. I can’t thank her enough for that.
Long story short… I got out of my comfort zone and survived.
