The end of an era. The space shuttle Discovery completed its final mission today. It was truly a marvel of engineering. 30 years ago when it was built, they didn’t have the technology that we have today. Getting this flying brick into space was an astonishing accomplishment. The on-board computer (that they still use) has 1 megabyte of RAM. The average digital picture is around 3 megabytes. I found a wristwatch that has 4 gigabytes of memory. Yet the scientists of the time were able to process all of the calculations, all of the navigation data, everything… on a computer that could barely run Pong. And it lasted over 30 years. I’m really looking forward to what they come up with next.
