9gag has had a serious problem with posting original work and not sourcing it. Especially with artists and webcomics. They don’t have a very good system for updating source information and they do not do much to encourage their users to add source information. Another common practice is watermark removal. The original watermarks get removed and then the image is re-watermarked with the 9gag user’s URL. That gives the impression that they made the content. This has happened to me personally about a dozen times.
I try not to post any artwork or webcomics from sites like 9gag, reddit, the Chive, or Funny Junk unless I know for sure it originated there. I’ve had several angry content creators telling me I was stealing. The nice thing about tumblr is that we all have the ability to go back and update the credit very quickly and easily. I’ve not had that same experience with these other sites.
I know this isn’t all the 9gag users and I’m not laying a giant blanket of blame on every person with a 9gag account. I just wish 9gag would do more to address the issue.
